First, there is Adrian Jacobs, a brooding and intense composer of avant-garde “new music.” His “compositions” are not melodic; instead, they consist of dissonant, conceptual sounds like kicking a bucket, breaking glass, or rustling paper. He believes he is creating serious, important work, even though no one wants to listen to it.

His brother, Josh, is his complete opposite. Josh is a handsome, successful, and commercially popular painter. His art is pleasant, conventional, and sells extremely well, which makes the high-art world dismiss him as a shallow sellout.

Caught between them is Madeleine, the beautiful and ambitious owner of a trendy Chelsea art gallery. She champions difficult, high-concept art—like stuffed animals nailed to a wall or an artist who falls down a flight of stairs as a performance piece. While she is intellectually drawn to Adrian’s “challenging” work, she is financially struggling and tempted by the commercial viability of artists like Josh.

A love triangle develops, forcing all three to confront their beliefs. Madeleine must decide whether to follow her artistic principles or her financial needs. The two brothers compete for her affection, representing the timeless conflict between artistic integrity and commercial success. The film hilariously satirizes the bizarre language, baffling exhibits, and intellectual posturing that define the contemporary art scene.
