In a last-ditch effort to reconnect, they book a getaway to a remote ranch in the desert, which is run by a charismatic but unsettling man named Dr. Godwin. He presents himself as a visionary who can heal their emotional wounds and help them overcome their past traumas.
However, the couple soon discovers that Dr. Godwin is a disgraced and unhinged former military surgeon. His methods for “fixing” things are not psychological but gruesomely physical. The title, “The Welder,” refers to his horrific passion: he conducts sadistic experiments where he literally welds flesh and bone, attempting to create the “perfect” human specimen from the parts of his victims.
Eliza and Roe realize they haven’t been brought to the ranch for therapy, but to become the next unwilling subjects in his monstrous project. The film descends into a brutal survival-horror narrative, focusing on body horror and the terror of being trapped by a madman who sees people as nothing more than raw materials for his twisted art.
