While seeking his fortune at the Oracle of Delphi, he falls deeply in love with Selene, a beautiful temple priestess. However, their love angers the sun god, Apollo, who is also in love with Selene.
In his jealousy, Apollo curses Ambrogio with a terrible affliction: his skin now burns under the light of the sun, forcing him to live in shadow. Desperate to be with his love, Ambrogio seeks help from Hades, the god of the underworld, who promises to help him in exchange for stealing a silver bow from the huntress goddess, Artemis.
When Ambrogio attempts the theft, Artemis catches him. As punishment for his crime and for his plan to use her silver against another god, she curses him again. She transforms him into a creature of the night, giving him fangs and a thirst for blood. Furthermore, she makes silver, the very metal of the bow he tried to steal, a substance that will burn his flesh.
Now a monstrous creature—immortal, burned by the sun and silver, and cursed with bloodlust—Ambrogio is the world’s first vampire. In the final, tragic twist, Selene prays to Artemis to be reunited with her love. Taking pity, Artemis grants her wish, but in a cruel way: Selene dies, and Ambrogio is condemned to forever hunt her spiritual descendants, drinking the blood of mortals to feel a fleeting echo of the love he lost.
